Twilight Photo Walk — Waterford City Centre
I dropped my son off at Waterford Youth Arts Film Workshop, which he attends each week. What is nice about this time of year, being it runs from 7:30 - 9:00 PM, is I can wander around and take twilight photos while he is in the workshop. I was going to film some video of my photo walk, but I kind of just got in a groove of taking photos. In this instance with the low light, I was concerned about spending more time working with filming the video, than taking the photos. That said, I plan to practice with video at night so it is more intuitive than stumbling through it.
I do wish it was a bit darker, but in a month or so, even at 9 pm her is Ireland it will be quite light. I ended up taking the exposure down a little bit in editing. But I was really please that with the Sony A7 IV paired with a Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art lens, I had no problem taking the images hand-held with easily well managed ISO levels that didn’t exceed 3200.
Adega Wine Bar | 1/80 sec, f/4.0 ISO 320
Every time I pass Adega, day or night, the space stands out with the bright orange facade. I loved the orange paired with the warm lighting against to cool blues of night settling over city centre. I could have taken this photo tighter, but I wanted to capture the overall cool setting.
Medieval Museum | 1/60 sec, f/8.0, ISO 640
Just past Adega, if fact you can see it in the background of the Adega image, is Waterford Medieval Museum. Architecturally, this is a fabulous building that has been photographed countless times. I have seen many wonderful photos of this building, and it is spectacular in black & white. This evening though, I wanted to take advantage of the colours and how they played off of each other.
City Square Public Car Park | 1/60 sec, f5.6, ISO 640
The lit green signs are what caught my eye here. That and I liked how we were led into the car park by the warm lighting. Most people will probably find this image kind of boring (my wife was like “meh”), but I found it interesting. Wouldn’t be a portfolio image, but is was worth taking and lightly editing.
The Gingerman Bar "| 1/60 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1250
Leading lines, I have been a sucker for leading lines since I first started with photography. The bit of water from an earlier shower, leading you down the passage to the brighter lights and colours. It would have been even better, if The Gingerman Bar lights were on, but sadly they had closed. I may try to take this photograph again when they are open.
Garter Lane Theatre | 1/60th sec, f/2.8, ISO 1250
I had photographed this scene earlier in the night, but it was still a bit bright out, and the colours weren’t quite popping yet. Without the colour and the subject in the background it was a bit dull. Luckily as I was walking back to the car to get my son from the workshop, the scene had totally changed. Now darker, the blue lights were quite prevalent, and I got lucky with someone chatting on the phone in the background, who is framed nicely with the entry way.
If you made it to the end here … Thank you!
